Managed IT vs Supplemental IT: Choosing the Right Level of Coverage and Ownership

Choosing between Full Managed IT and Supplemental (Co-Managed) IT comes down to one thing: how much responsibility you want your IT partner to assume—and where you need the most support. Xantrion delivers services through these two models so organizations can match IT coverage to their internal capabilities, security requirements, and support expectations.

In a Full Managed IT relationship, Xantrion operates as your primary IT provider, managing the day-to-day technology environment through an integrated program. That means employees work directly with Xantrion for support on covered systems, while Xantrion takes broad ownership of the functions that keep your business running. IT operations and administration, monitoring and maintenance, cybersecurity operations, backup and recovery, network and infrastructure management, and strategic technology guidance through vCIO-led planning. The goal is consistency and accountability: fewer handoffs, clearer ownership, and an IT environment that’s maintained proactively instead of reactively.

With Supplemental (Co-Managed) IT + Security, your organization keeps internal IT ownership while adding coverage in the areas where your team needs more bandwidth, deeper expertise, or round-the-clock monitoring. Your internal IT team remains the employee-facing point of contact and continues to own daily operations, while Xantrion works alongside them with clearly defined responsibilities. This inlcudes providing vCIO guidance, monitoring and alert response for covered systems, cybersecurity operations, backup and recovery support, and escalation help tied to the services you select. Because it’s modular, this model can evolve as your needs change without forcing a full outsourcing decision.

In both models, projects and major changes such as migrations, major upgrades, new system implementations, and office moves are typically scoped separately.

Service Models at a Glance

Xantrion’s services are generally delivered through one of two service models: Full Managed IT or Supplemental / Co-Managed IT. The right model depends on your organization’s internal IT capabilities, desired level of outsourcing, support expectations, security requirements, and how much responsibility you want Xantrion to assume.

In a Full Managed IT relationship, Xantrion’s services are designed to operate as a complete managed IT program. In a Supplemental / Co-Managed relationship, services can be selected to complement your internal team and adjusted over time as your needs change.

Choosing Between the Options

The main difference between the two options is the level of responsibility a company wants the MSP to assume.

With Full Managed IT, Xantrion becomes the primary IT provider. Employees work directly with Xantrion for support, and Xantrion assumes broad responsibility for employee support, IT operations, monitoring, cybersecurity operations, backup and recovery, network and infrastructure management, and strategic technology guidance.

With Supplemental IT + Security, the company retains internal IT ownership. Your internal IT team remains the primary point of contact for employees and continues to own day-to-day IT operations, while the MSP adds vCIO guidance, monitoring, maintenance, cybersecurity operations, backup and recovery support, and escalation assistance.
