A new study from Ponemon Institute shows that organizations that are found non-compliant with data protection requirements will spend 2.7 times more money getting into compliance than they would have if they'd been compliant in the first place. That's no small expense, either. The average cost of compliance rose from about $3.5 million in 2011 to just under $5.5 million in 2017. Meanwhile, non-compliance costs swelled from $9.4 million to $14.8 million, an increase of more than 57%.
