The FBI dropped its attempts to force Apple to circumvent its own encryption on a phone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters after successfully accessing the phone's contents with the help of a third-party vendor. However, the question of how far government can go in demanding backdoor access to private companies' security technology remains unanswered — and security experts say it will probably stay that way.
Safety and civil liberties are equally important. Therefore, it will never be easy to balance the desire to give law enforcement an early warning of potentially dangerous activities against the constitutionally protected right to privacy. And frankly, we at Xantrion don't think it ever should be.
