If your business is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 on desktop and mobile devices running Intel Skylake processors, Microsoft has just given you a little more breathing space before you have to upgrade.
Back in January, Microsoft said that it would only release the "most critical" security fixes for Windows 7 and 8.1 on Skylake systems after July 17, 2017. This accompanied the news that Windows 10 would be the only supported Windows platform for Intel's next generation of processors, code-named Kaby Lake, which are expected to come out later this year.
Last month, though, Microsoft extended that deadline. It will now continue to provide all compatibility and security updates for Windows 7 or 8.1 on Skylake systems until end of life — January 14, 2020 for Windows 7, and January 10, 2023 for Windows 8.1.
We still think you should upgrade Windows before then — but we appreciate having more time to help you plan the transition!
