Microsoft Eases Up on Aggressive Windows Upgrades

Anne Bisagno

Automatic software updates often make it easy and convenient to keep your IT environment up to date and secure — but when Microsoft started pushing out automatic upgrades from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10, many users found it anything but easy and convenient. In fact, they accused Microsoft of concealing the OS upgrade among more routine software updates and forcing upgrades accidentally and against their will. In May, a small business owner successfully sued Microsoft for $10,000 to cover lost wages and a new computer after the unauthorized upgrade crippled her PC.

Microsoft has responded to this swarm of complaints by changing the way it offers the OS upgrade and offering free tech support to anyone negatively affected by it. That's thoughtful of Microsoft, but since Xantrion's own engineers have found that only 10 percent of Windows 10 upgrades complete without problems, we suspect Microsoft's tech support team is going to be busy.

We think Windows 10 is worth adopting, but we also think OS upgrades should happen on your own terms. Give us a call to discuss how we can help you complete your Windows 10 upgrade smoothly — or put it off until you're ready.
