The Challenge:

Interland USA is an unusual real estate company: the revenues it generates from executive office parks and large apartment complexes support the charitable goals of a private non-profit foundation. The developer has all the concerns of a strictly commercial business — including worries about managing multiple offices, such as Davis, San Francisco, and San Mateo, with just one I.T. support person. Yet as a non-profit, it also needs to be more than ordinarily vigilant about keeping I.T. costs low.

The Solution:

Interland USA first turned to Xantrion to set up a safety net for its one-person I.T. support staff. MIS director Blake Soiu now receives prompt alerts whenever Xantrion Constant Monitoring detects a potential computer network issue. When he's out of the office or handling another I.T. support issue, Xantrion steps in to control and remediate problems, minimizing downtime while giving Soiu the flexibility to prioritize simultaneous demands on his time.

Interland USA also chose Xantrion to handle its online backups after discovering Xantrion offered backups at almost half the cost of the developer's previous vendor. In addition, Xantrion would retain all past data backed up online, a feature the other vendor didn't offer.

Most recently, Xantrion helped Interland USA with a server project, consolidating the contents of eleven physical servers onto the three newest. In just four days, a Xantrion consultant virtualized eight servers, then provided Soiu with all the documentation necessary to virtualize the rest of the servers himself. "They provided answers to every question, even basic ones like how to bring up the virtual machines and run updates, accompanied by step-by-step screenshots," Soiu says.

The Outcome:

Today, Interland USA enjoys reliable computer network performance and the security of knowing its business-critical data is backed up online continuously and safely. Just as importantly, the virtualization project paid for itself in months, eliminating about $40,000 in projected hardware costs while cutting power consumption by at least 35 percent in a single year. "They even offer all the licenses with VMWare and Dell at lower costs than VMWare and Dell offer directly," Soiu says.

"I asked several companies to draw up a virtualization plan, but only Xantrion listened to what we wanted instead of telling us what they thought we needed," he adds. "Every individual I've worked with there has been top-notch."
